Centre of Excellence for Surgical Diseases of the Pancreas

In March 2012, the Clinic for General, Visceral and Transplant Surgery was awarded the title of certified "Centre of Excellence for Surgical Diseases of the Pancreas" by the German Society for General and Visceral Surgery (DGAV).

In the elaborate certification process, in addition to a minimum number of different pancreas operations, the infrastructure for diagnostics and therapy as well as interdisciplinary treatment of patients are also assessed. At the European Pancreas Centre Heidelberg, which is integrated at the clinic, surgeons work together with, among others, cancer physicians, radiotherapists, gastroenterologists, endocrinologists and pathologists, as well as radiologists, anaesthetists and intensive care specialists.

In addition, the DGAV demands extensive research activities from a centre of excellence, including clinical studies and scientific publications. For many years, the European Pancreas Centre has maintained its own research laboratory, where around 30 scientists and laboratory technicians carry out basic research as well as translational research. There they investigate possible molecular and genetic causes of pancreatic cancer and work on developing new forms of treatment to be offered to patients at the University Department of Surgery.

Another goal is to improve diagnostics in order to be able to combat this particularly aggressive form of cancer at an early stage.
New treatment methods are being tested in numerous clinical studies at the European Pancreas Centre. Here, the experts cooperate with the National Centre for Tumour Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg, the University of Heidelberg and the Study Centre of the German Society for Surgery (SDGC).

The designation as a centre of excellence certifies the top-class quality of the clinical and scientific work and must be acquired again in a re-certification procedure at three-year intervals.

Patient care, research and teaching at the highest level

Our centre is part of the Clinic for General, Visceral and Transplant Surgery, which is part of the long-established Surgical University Hospital in Heidelberg. It is composed of a central operating wing, a day clinic for outpatient operations and interdisciplinary facilities. In addition, numerous special consultations support our patients with rare diseases. Specialist care is completed by the interdisciplinary emergency outpatient clinic, which is staffed around the clock.
In addition to care in the outpatient area and on the general care wards, we care for the patients entrusted to us in special intermediate care and intensive care units. Here we can see how much our patients benefit from the teamwork between nursing, surgeons and anaesthetists. While the anaesthetists and surgeons ensure optimal treatment tailored to you and your medical history, our nursing colleagues make sure that you are well looked after medically and in terms of nursing care during your stay.

Excellent research from Heidelberg and teaching with practical relevance

At our clinic, intensive research is also carried out on the systematic further development of treatment procedures and on the perfection of established surgical techniques. Students at the Faculty of Medicine also benefit from the close links between medical research and patient care. With the help of innovative concepts, the future colleagues get to know everyday hospital life at an early stage and learn to take on responsibility.
